Overcoming Public Speaking Anxiety: How to Speak with Confidence

Jesse Deildale • August 27, 2025

Public speaking is often cited as one of the biggest fears people have, and for good reason. The thought of standing in front of a crowd, all eyes on you, can be overwhelming. But here's the thing: With the right mindset and techniques, anyone can become a confident public speaker.

1. Start with Preparation

The key to confidence is preparation. Know your material inside and out, but also have a plan for what to do if things don’t go as expected. Rehearse your speech multiple times, and try to do it in front of a small audience. This will help you get used to the idea of speaking in front of others.

2. Focus on Breathing

Anxiety can make your breathing shallow, which only adds to nervousness. Before you step in front of the crowd, take a few deep breaths to calm your mind and body. As you speak, remember to pause and breathe deeply, helping to maintain a steady, confident tone.

3. Shift the Focus to Your Message

Instead of worrying about how you look or how others might judge you, shift your focus to the message you want to deliver. Think about the impact your words can have on the audience. When you focus on the value you're providing, the pressure to perform will feel less daunting.

4. Engage with the Audience

Remember, public speaking is a conversation. Make eye contact, smile, and engage with your audience. The more you connect with them, the more comfortable you will feel, and the more they’ll appreciate what you have to say.

5. Practice Self-Compassion

Finally, be kind to yourself. Every speaker has moments of nerves or awkwardness, and that's okay. Public speaking is a skill that gets better with practice. Don’t be too hard on yourself if things don’t go perfectly—each experience is a step forward.
